The Referee Runs More Than Most Players on the Field
Think football players do all the running? Think again. A top-level referee covers about 10 to 12 kilometers during a single match. That is more than most goalkeepers, defenders, and even some midfielders. The referee has to be everywhere at once — near the ball, watching for fouls, checking offside lines, and keeping up with counter-attacks. At the World Cup, referees train just as hard as players. They run sprints, pass fitness tests, and follow strict diets. And unlike players, they never get substituted. If a referee gets tired in the 80th minute, too bad — the game goes on. Next time you complain about a ref, remember: they probably ran farther today than you did all month.
